Kids Read Now! - Exciting Opportunity

Hello Parents & Caregivers!

The deadline to receive free books has been extended!  We are excited to share an opportunity for your child to receive free books!  Yes, FREE! With secured grant funding, you may choose to enroll your child in a summer program by the Kids Read Now organization to receive 7 books, mailed directly to your child, throughout the summer.

Thank you to the 111 families that have enrolled in this amazing opportunity but we need ALL JHES families to complete the form below, even if you are not interested in receiving free books this summer.

Please complete this form to learn more about the program, what's involved, and enroll your child. Email our Reading Support Teacher at julia_lubelczyk@hcpss.org with any questions.

Research confirms having access to books at home and daily reading impacts both students' vocabulary development and long-term academic success. Thank you for considering this wonderful opportunity to help your child!

Winter Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent teacher conferences will take place with your child's math teacher on Thursday, February 10 and Friday, February 11.  Conferences will be virtual.  If you would like to schedule an in-person conference, please email your request to your child’s teacher.  Some teachers may offer evening conferences on Thursday, February 10.  **Ms. Strawhorn will meet with her grade 5 math students.  The conference sign-up opened last Friday, January 28 and closes on Friday, February 4. Conferences will be 15 minutes with 5 minutes of transition time.  Due to the limited number of time slots, please reserve spaces for those with concerns and questions that cannot be answered easily in an email.

Understanding the Elementary Report Card:

A reference sheet has been developed to support families in understanding the Elementary School Report Card.  If you have additional questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Vaccination Documentation

If your child has been vaccinated, please send proof of vaccination to marcia_hospedales@hcpss.org.  Thank you.

Outdoor Eating and Recess

Please be sure that your child is dressed in warm clothing to protect them during cold weather when participating in recess, lunch and other outside activities.

The following criteria are considered as we make the decision to have outdoor lunch and recess.

  • Wind chill

  • Age of students

  • Length of time outdoors

  • Adequacy of the children’s clothing

  • Condition of the playground

  • Falling precipitation (more than a sprinkle or mist)

  • Thunder and lightning

Generally, it is assumed that students will be outside for recess, outdoor eating, physical education, or any other outdoor activity when the temperature combined with the wind chill is not less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit.  Children with certain health conditions may need special accommodations during extremely hot or cold weather.  Parents of those children are to provide medical documentation and/or be consulted for determining if other arrangements are necessary.

NEW COATS AVAILABLE!

We are extremely grateful to our community partners that donated new coats.  If your child mysteriously grew out of their coat overnight, (trust me, it happens) don’t worry, we may have a coat available. Call Ms. Bright at (410) 313-6872 to request a coat and we will be sure check our inventory for a nice, warm, new coat. Thank you.
